Water Treatment

Water Treatment

It is commonly known that calcium content in water can cause limescale. However, this in only one of the factors that can affect the performance of a heating system. Water quality can also be affected by:

  • Oxygen
  • Chlorides
  • Minerals
  • Sludge and Debris
  • PH

We advise to always check the water quality before topping up the system. Also a good rule of thumb is to avoid topping up by more than 5% of the installation’s water content in any one year.

Naturally it’s always recommended to also thoroughly flush any new or existing system before installing a new boiler. Specialist advice can be obtained from reputable manufacturers such as Sentinel Performance Solutions Ltd and Fernox – although others are available but these should be supported by guarantees of fitness for purpose.

As a member of the Industrial and Commercial Energy Association (ICOM) we have worked alongside other manufacturers in the commercial heating sector to compile a Water Treatment and Conditioning Guide which provides guidance for the recommended water treatment regimes for commercial boilers and Domestic Hot Water. These guidelines are to read in conjunction with our own O&M manuals which take precedence if specific recommendations are to be followed.
