Ty Plas Isaf Care Home, located in Carmarthenshire, recently undertook a significant upgrade to its heating system, ensuring a more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly solution. Originally built in 1987, the care home provides accommodation for 33 residents, offering a safe and comfortable environment for elderly individuals who require ongoing support. Over the years, the care home has maintained a focus on delivering quality care, and this commitment extends to ensuring that the facilities, including heating systems, are modern, efficient, and capable of meeting current environmental standards.
The Need for an Upgrade
The existing heating system at Ty Plas Isaf consisted of floor-standing atmospheric boilers, which, while reliable, these types of boilers have become outdated in terms of energy efficiency ratings and carbon emissions. As energy efficiency standards have evolved, so too has the need for care facilities to adapt, not only to reduce operating costs but also to contribute to broader environmental goals, such as reducing carbon footprints and harmful emissions.
Carmarthenshire County Council, the entity responsible for the care home, recognised the need to modernise the heating system. The goal was to install a system that would not only improve the efficiency of the heating but also significantly reduce harmful emissions, particularly nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are known to contribute to air pollution and have adverse health effects.
The Solution: Strebel S-CBX 85kW Gas Condensing Boilers
After careful consideration and consultation with Bullock Consulting, it was decided that the best solution would be to replace the old boiler types with three Strebel S-CBX 85kW gas condensing boilers. These gas boilers are known for their ultra-low NOx emissions and high efficiency, making them an ideal choice for facilities like Ty Plas Isaf, where both performance and environmental impact are of paramount importance.
The S-CBX 85kW boilers were installed in a cascade arrangement, a setup that allows for more efficient load sharing between the boilers, optimising energy use and ensuring that the system can adapt to varying demands throughout the day. This configuration also provides redundancy, meaning that if one boiler requires maintenance, the others can continue to operate, ensuring a consistent heating supply for the residents.
One of the standout features of the S-CBX 85kW boiler is its exceptionally low NOx emissions—only 23.1mg/kWh. This low level of emissions not only helps reduce the environmental impact of the care home but also qualifies the system for the maximum two BREEAM credits available for low-emission heating solutions. BREEAM is a leading sustainability assessment method for buildings, and achieving these credits is a significant accomplishment that highlights the environmental benefits of the new system.
Implementation and Execution
The installation of the new heating system was carried out by Swansea-based contractor Andrew D’Auria Solutions Ltd. Given the nature of the care home environment, where maintaining a comfortable and stable temperature is crucial for the well-being of residents, the installation needed to be carefully planned to minimise disruption.
To achieve this, the installation was carried out in phases. Initially, one boiler, along with the cascade frame and pipework assembly, was installed. This phased approach allowed the existing heating system to continue operating during the installation, ensuring that there was no downtime that could affect the comfort of the residents. Once the first boiler was successfully installed and operational, the remaining two boilers were added, completing the system.
Shane Clement, the Commercial Manager for the project, emphasised the importance of this approach, stating, “We planned the installation this way to minimise downtime and to keep residents comfortable and happy. Our client is very pleased with their new system.” The successful execution of this plan ensured that the care home remained fully operational throughout the upgrade, with no adverse impact on the residents’ comfort.
Benefits and Long-Term Impact
The newly installed heating system at Ty Plas Isaf Care Home offers several significant benefits. Firstly, the modern condensing boiler technology are far more efficient than the old non-condensing boilers, which translates into reduced fuel consumption and lower running costs. This efficiency is not only beneficial for the operational budget but also aligns with Carmarthenshire County Council’s goals of reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainability.
Secondly, the ultra-low NOx emissions of the S-CBX 85kW boilers contribute to a healthier environment, both within the care home and in the surrounding community. By choosing a system that minimises harmful emissions, the care home is doing its part to improve air quality and reduce its overall environmental impact.
Conclusion
The heating system upgrade at Ty Plas Isaf Care Home is a prime example of how modern technology can be used to enhance both the efficiency and sustainability of essential services. By investing in Strebel’s S-CBX 85kW gas condensing boilers, the care home has secured a heating solution that will serve the needs of its residents for many years to come, while also supporting the broader environmental goals of reducing carbon and NOx emissions. The successful installation, carefully managed to avoid disruption, ensures that the care home remains a comfortable and safe environment for its residents, showcasing the importance of thoughtful planning and advanced technology in the ongoing maintenance and improvement of care facilities.
