The dizzying world of commercial air source heat pumps can be a confusing one. There are multiple manufacturers with multiple options and multiple solutions bombarding you with information, facts and figures which can make the task of choosing the right renewable energy source, a lengthy process. It’s like choosing your next car. The possibilities are endless until you start to pinpoint exactly what your criteria is. Will it perform when I need it to? Will it be energy efficient? Will it ensure energy bills and operating costs are cost-effective? Will it reduce the business’s carbon footprint?
So, what have we done at Strebel to make the decision process easier for your Commercial Air Source Heat Pump project, when considering what you actually need?
Our wide range of commercial heat pumps has evolved based on satisfying engineers’ requirements. If you want low flow temperatures with low GWP you’ve got it. If you want high flow temperatures with low GWP you can have that as well. High efficiency – no problem. Hot Water production without the constant need for immersion backup – we’ve got that covered too.
With systems ranging from 25kW all the way to 100kW with the ability to cascade up to 16 units across our entire air source heat pump range, we are confident we have it covered. It now comes down to choosing the best possible sustainable heating solution for your project.

Flow Temperatures
Let’s delve into our range a little deeper and demonstrate what we mean. You have a project that requires ultra-low GWP, high flow temperatures for heating and DHW production but has limited space for plant. In this case, then the S-ASX-NTi air source heat pump range is a real option. With the ability to provide stable 73°C flow temperature down to external air temperatures of -17, this technology is perfect for central heating and hot water supply. Not only that with a GWP of just 3, as a result of the R290 refrigerant, and the compact design (max 2 fans) it may just tick all your boxes.
Sound good? What if you just need a low flow temperature for a central heating system only? A Commercial Air Source Heat Pump that just delivers the most basic of functions – you know – just heating. All Strebel Air Source Heat Pumps can work for you. It now comes down to the detail of design and project requirements.
For instance, our S-ASX-LP (Low Pollutant) machines utilise R454B refrigerant, with a low GWP of 467, and are designed to offer low flow temperatures only up to 55°C at -4°C ambient air temperature to be exact. A great choice for new build projects and commercial premises with heating only in mind.
Our S-ASX-VPi55 machine, on the other hand, is a single unit with inverter compressor and vapour injection technology, ensuring stable flow temperatures throughout the year, up to 67°C and all within a compact, highly efficient, simple-to-install package. And a SCOP of 3.42 at 55°C flow cannot be ignored.
Choose Your Output
Maybe you’re looking for something a little bit bigger? Do you need 70,80,90 or even 100kw outputs? Then our S-ASX-VP, LQ and NT ranges have proven themselves time and time again on projects across the UK. The S-ASX-NT offers a GWP of 3, high flow temperatures across all the systems and outstanding efficiencies, so they are definitely worth consideration. As before, with the ability to cascade multiple units, if demand for Hot Water along with heating is high, then these systems will provide the solution for 365 days of the year, to ensure a return on investment.
And yes, we understand that it’s not all about heating. All our commercial air source heat pumps are fully reversible, offering cooling when needed (ok, ok it may only be a few days of the year if this summer is anything to go by, but it’s there). But providing the perfect, comfortable working environment shouldn’t be just for new build commercial buildings only. It’s now completely feasible for retrofit projects using heat pumps and fan coils for instance as emitters, to provide the ideal solution for commercial spaces, whatever the season.
The above demonstrates some of the features of our systems, but not all. Wouldn’t it be great to understand SCOP at different flow temps, GWP’s of the refrigerants used, kW output options, sound pressure levels, max flow temps at -4°C for example, all from one easy-to-read document. One document that determines all the above makes that initial selection a little easier.
The Strebel UK ASHP Selector Guide does just that, available to download direct to PC, laptop or mobile, this guide takes you through each option detailing the above and with the added benefit of a QR code that takes you to the data sheets of each model.
The Next Stages
You have now looked at the options and chosen your commercial air source heat pump. Now it’s onto the next stage.
We have Thermal Stores, Calorifiers, Accessories and everything else in between. With fifty years of industry experience, we can also guide and assist with calculations on thermal storage and hot water supply. We will need accurate information, of course, to determine the most efficient and cost-effective solution, but with the ability to provide packaged systems from one company, we have just made it all a lot easier. And again, the Strebel website guides you through the complete range of air source heat pumps, simply, effectively and in a way that’s easy to understand.
We have also introduced Acoustic Enclosures for projects that are being considered in noise-sensitive areas. Reducing noise emissions by up to 15 dB(A) which have been installed onto the commercial air source heat pump before delivery, these S-ACE15 enclosures save time and space on site, whilst offering the benefit of noise abatement.
In Summary
To summarise, with a system and set of accessories for everything your project throws at you, the task at hand is not as daunting as you first thought. So like choosing your next car, make sure it does everything you want it to; fits the purpose; fits your needs and gets on with the job as easily and efficiently as possible.
